bearer cheque presented over counter for cash payment by illiterate puting thumb impression ,can we pay without confirming his identity

since payment in due course even in respect of bearer cheques is to be without negligence, it is necessary to have some proof of identity of the person receiving payment. An illiterate's thumb impression may be required to be attested by some one known to the bank
