Dear Sir / Madam,

Since the agent has not completed your work and he / she has lied to you that they have misplaced the cheque, you are right on your part to have instructed your Bank to stop payment of the cheque. You should accordingly reply to the legal notice, if any, that you have received and mention the the nature and quantum of your incomplete work by the agent in your reply to the legal notice. If the amount paid by you is more than the work completed by the agent till date, you should instruct the agent in writing to complete the work, else return the balance amount for the unfinished work back to you. Vice versa, if there is any shortfall in the amount you have paid to the agent till date, you should pay-off and settle the balance amount to the agent, and get the remaining incomplete work finished by another agent.
