A defendant may amend his written statement and not the suit. In your defence, you may provide details about non-existence of the cause of action.

Dear Sir / Madam,
Written submissions to the Court cannot be amended. In the event the Judge hearing the matter asks the plaintiff to justify further with a written submission, the defendant can then file an addendum to the plaintiff's submission in Court.
