MP3s in the workplace

Hello,

I am in the process of performing our quarterly software audit. We do this from time to time to ensure we have purchased all required licenses for the software we use.

An interesting issue is facing me this time. Specifically, MP3s and other multimedia files. How are these to be handled in the workplace? Since MP3s come from copyrighted material, should these files be removed from the organization if found?

I wanted to know before pissing off a ton of people here :-).

Thanks.

Re: MP3s in the workplace

I can think of no legitimate use for MP3's in the normal work situation unless your business involves music and/or performing artists. I would purge them from the system on that basis alone.

Also, you could certainly be in danger of copyright infringement as recent cases have shown, which is yet another good reason to purge them.

BMI and ASCAP routinely file suit against those using pirated music whatever the application.
