Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in India
My father is recently deceased. As his daughter, I have been in touch with all credit cards which he was holding. I have mailed all of them his death certificate and have been seeking settlement on his outstanding dues. Yesterday however, when I called AMEX and they refused to entertain my call saying there has been a change in procedure and they will only talk to the person listed as his legal heir. If i get registered as my father's legal heir, does that make me liable for his debts?

Dear Madam,
Obviously, all legal heirs (sons and daughters) are jointly liable to settle your father's dues. You should take the initiative and make a list of all your father's outstanding dues, arrive at the total liability, and equally divide the liability amongst all your brothers and sisters to pay and settle the bank.
