i have a school assignment where i need to find 4 news articles covering these themes for crime but im kinda stuck with exactly what i'm supposed to be looking for. the themes are:

-the role of discretion in the criminal justice system

-issues of compliance and non compliance in regard to criminal law

-the extent to which law reflects moral and ethical standards

-the role of law reform in the criminal justice system

-the extent to which the law balances the rights of victims, offenders and society

Sentences of 6 months or less are fixed terms ie there are no non parole periods.

However, sentences above 6 months will normally have a non parole period (minimum term) and a period on parole. So unless the judge ordered a fixed term sentence, the person should have a non parole period at which time their eligibility for parole will be determined by the parole board. I hope this answers your question, but they a little more information about whether the 3 years is the full term or the non parole period
