Legal Question in Family Law in Lebanon
American (of Lebanese origin) woman (orthodox) married Lebanese man (Syriac) in a civil union in Cyprus . They are both residing with their 4 years old between Qatar and Lebanon. Man is abusive mentally and physically , mentally ill, irresponsible ... And he is the one wanting divorce !!! Household living partly on his salary and mostly from his and her parents!!! She left her job in Lebanon to go live with him in Qatar and raise their daughter in a "normal" home, with a father around (which he is almost never ....just physically!!). marriage registered in Lebanon. Not married in church . Where should the divorce be filed ? What are the wife and kid entitled to ? How does property gets divided? How long does it take ? How much does it cost ? Thanks!!

Dear Sir/Madame,
Since the marriage took place in Cyprus, the civil Court in Lebanon will have jurisdiction to look at the case and pronounce the divorce.
The Court will apply the Cypriot law to rule on:
1. The divorce itself
2. The custody and alimony of the kid
3. The damages due to the wife.
Basically she should be able to get the divorce , the custody of the kid and claim for damages. She can also initiate a criminal proceeding for domestic abuse.
4. As for the common properties they woyld be subject to the law of their location. In Lebanon it will be the rule of seperation of goods.
In all cases we would need more details to be able to accurately advise.
