My wife has relocated to Texas and will file for divorce whe she achieves residency, if I file in Germany will it be recognized in Texas. Where can I find someone familiar with this type of situation?

I do alot of work with German/EEC divorces. Unless you have alot of property at stake in either country it really is not worth fighting over. The key issues that you need to think of are

1. Custody of children, Texas may be cheaper than germany for support, you may have a better shot at custody in Germany.

2. Property loctaed in Germany: A German court is far less inclined to approve an American Court order divesting you of property in Germany and vice versa.

3. Legal fees. These can be very expesive as you may wind up flying stacks of lawyers to germany and the US.

Often the best course is to diiscuss the outlines of a settlement and then meet with a mediator in a neutral place and file the divorce where it makes the most sense.

I was born in Hamburg, speak fluent German and work with several lawyers in Germany in these types of cases. In fact my father still lives part of the year in Wuppertal.
