Legal Question in Family Law in India

Hi, My friend got married on 23/03/2011 and now its being 3 years he is having a girl child who is 2 years old. It was an arranged marriage. He is 30 years old and his wife is 25 years old. she does not behaves matured she does not take care of her child . She always stays in her mother's house she is refusing to stay in his house. He went and spoke to his mother-in law's family but they are refusing to send their daughter to her husband's house. So he went and filed a case in Police station before 4 months(September) and in the month of November he received a layer notice from his wife family stating that she does not like to live with him but they are asking Jeevanaamsam for the Maintenance expenses. Now he wants to know what to do. Is there any rules in the law for asking this Jeevanaamsam with out getting divorced? To whom custody the children should be there?
