my friend was recently in an argument with her stepson's girlfriend, she slapped the 19 year old school girl who was being rude to her she has had the police come to lay a charge against her for assault, she is going to a lawyer what can happen in a case like thisa?

I'm afraid that what is described above amounts to common assault, which is a criminal offence. If the girlfriend persists with her charge, your friend may be prosecuted criminally. Of course, the girlfriend may also choose to institute a civil claim for damages.
While the incident was unfortunate and is probably being blow out of proportion, the consequences for your friend can unfortunately be dire. If at all possible, she must try and make peace with the girlfriend and hopefully the girlfriend will withdraw the charges.
