is it legal to be locked up 24hrs after laying an assault case after appearing at a police station the y tell you to come back the following day and be locked up from 10am-6pm with the same people in one cell because you do not want to withdraw the case with a 16 year old that olso suffered injuries

It certainly does not sound legal. The police may not arrest and/or detain people for any other reason than ensuring their attendance at court on charges that are serious enough to justify arrest in the first place.
