photography business
to what extent does a portrait belong to the photographer? does the photographer have any right to display any portrait to show potential clients of their abilities?

I am not a trademark attorney and advise you to seek the assistance of a local attorney with such experience. As an afterthought, what does you contract say with your client -- you should be able to "cover" this issue with a properly worded written contract with the customer signing a "release" for such commercial display.
