Trademark would be the appopriate avenue for protecting your business name. The kind of business you plan to start will dictate which license/s you will be required to obtain and maintain.
Financing, Marketing and Target Market, Location, , Policies, Company Rules and Regulations, Tax Status, Accounting, Employees . . . . All of these issues should be addressed before the start of your new business operation. Much of this can be included in your business plan.
