Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Alabama
Medical questions/Workplace
What questions are legal for a supervisor to ask an employee who calls in sick? My daughter was sick today and I called in for her (she was unable). Her supervisor asked me what was wrong with her! I was caught off guard and told him. When I asked my daughter, she said this was standard practice. She and a friend who works with her told me that they are told to tell what is wrong with them or face being fired! She does not miss work unless she is sick and is a good employee, recieving awards, praise, etc. Is this not illegal?

Re: Medical questions/Workplace
I doubt that it is appropriate for the employer to ask what is wrong with her. It *is* appropriate for the employer to ask for verification of illness (doctor's notes are very common) in order for her to claim sick time, but as to the actual ailment, it's none of the employer's business.
If the employer uses it against her, there may be grounds for a lawsuit based on discrimination for health reasons, but hopefully it won't come to that.
