There may be more to this question than first appears, namely, whether the owner intends continuing access. If you have any doubt as to the owner's intent that you have access presently, irrespective of the earlier permission, then you should ask.

Knowing the password to someone else's email does not entitle you to log in, just as having the key to someone else's home doesn't entitle you to enter it. If the other person has not authorized you to access his email, then doing so would be illegal.

Depending upon the circumstances, giving you the password may or may not have implied permission to access the account. Even if it did, that permission may have been limited. You may only access the account to the extent its owner authorized.
