Can a credit card company charge you and over-the-limit fee if the account is closed?

Re: credit card billing

Your cardholder agreement would be the first place to look for these terms. If your account is entirely closed and paid in full, it is unlikely that you can be charged anything.

Re: credit card billing

Write to the credit card company and ask them to show you how they are authorized to charge you over the limit fees when your account is closed. They don't have to respond but if they won't then that can be helpful later.

See what kind of response you get then check out your credit reports to see if there is an inaccuarate balance on your reports. You can always dispute it if it is inaccuarate and use the letter you sent to the credit card company asking for why they added the fees.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks
