Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alabama
Debt Collection
I was harassed on the phone by a cdebt collection firm regarding my daughter's debt. No permission was give for them to talk to me. No correspondence was received at my adress or my daughter's address. Only one letter after they contacted me. Evidently another frim got her account. We dsidn't know this because we never heard from them. A law firm started calling about the debt. I sent a letter asking them to send us proof of the debt . We never heard from them. Someone dropped off some papers at my daughters door. They intend to sue. She talked to the law firm. The papers had her old address and was dated jan 2007. They say they mailed her several letters to her new address, but she never received any. She has 2 more semesters before she graduates college. She is puttiing herself through school full time, working 3/4 time. I am on disability and cannot help her. She tried to make arrangements to make payments, but they want her to come up with a large sum. She has no property and if they garnish her wages she may not have a job. Is there any thing we can tell this law firm to get them to accept payments until she graduates and finds a job teaching?

Re: Debt Collection
I'm a little confused. Did the first collection firm send you the letter or was that a second firm?
Is it a local law firm or an out of state lawfirm?

Re: Debt Collection
This sounds like a violation of the federal Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. You should contact a consumer lawyer in your area for help.
