Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Alabama

My husband and I checked our credit report and someone had opened a Directv account. It says we owe 248. We have never even had a Directv account what should we do? Should we file a police report?

Yes. File a police report and then send a copy to DirectTV and dispute credit report. Send certified mail return receipt and keep a copy.

Randal gave you good advice. Also if it is identity theft then you will need to fill out an ID theft affidavit -- normally if you put that with the police report and enclose all of that in your dispute letter to each credit reporting agency (certified mail, return receipt) then it will get deleted.

Here is the ID theft affidavit -- http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/resources/forms/affidavit.pdf

Keep a signed copy of your letter and all attachments and you can clip the green card to that when you get it back.

You should have a response back in 30-45 days after you send the disputes.

If it is not corrected, then get with a consumer attorney to see if you should dispute again or simply sue DirectTV and the credit reporting agencies that are keeping this false information on your reports.

Best wishes...
