who pays handy man

friend asked me to buy material.another friend a handy man would do the repairs on his house.He would get a loan and pay both of us.He did not honor his agreement now the handyman says I owe him for the repairs because i bought the material.there was no contract He is seeing an attorney to try and make me pay the homeowners bill of $6,000
