Legal Question in Criminal Law in Alabama

check scam

I believe I have been scammed through the mail. I received $2000.00 in travelers checks in the mail. They were sent to my name and address. They had a man's name and address on the prority mail letter return sender. I was not sure who he was but I asked a bank clerk if they were real and she said they looked real to her. So, I used them at two different stores and tried to use one at a restaurant and they would not take it. She said it didn't look right to her. So I said ok and went home and researched these checks further. I finally found online a site that did say checks with the same number as mine has as fraudulent. What do I do? I am afraid I will be charged with a crime.

Re: check scam

The quickest thing to do would be go to the vendors where you used the checks and pay them in cash. Obviously you received some service or object and are due to pay them. This may prevent them from filing charges and having to worry about a lawyer.
