Legal Question in Criminal Law in Alabama

criminal slander in Alabama

I reported a case of elderly abuse and the perpertraitor emailed me and said that there is an arrest warrant out for me in Alabama for criminal slander. Is there such a thing and how would I find out if there is?

Re: criminal slander in Alabama

While a person can be sued for slander (defamation), there is no such thing as criminal slander in Alabama. The only possible criminal charge would be that of making a false report to law enforcement, if that happened. However, since the person did not know the name of the charge, the likelihood of there being any truth to his or her claim seems low.

However, if this person is attempting to scare you out of prosecuting him or her, that person may be guilty of witness tampering.

I would suggest that you call whoever you made the report to, and tell them about the email you received. See if they will tell you whether or not some warrant has been issued for you, or for the other person.

Some law enforcement agencies will tell you whether or not you have a warrant for your arrest, and others will not. Whether you receive any help from them will depend on whether they are actually prosecuting the other person and/or their local policies.

Good luck. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know.
