Legal Question in Criminal Law in Alabama
What is they difference between not guilty and innocent?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Not guilty is a legal term that means a person's guilt of a crime was not proven beyond a reasonable doubt. A person may have committed the crime, but the prosecution could not prove their guilt to a sufficient degree to satisfy the law.
Innocent means the person is actually innocent of the charge. Actual innocence does not necessarily mean the person will be found not guilty in court. Unfortunately, there are many innocent people sitting in prisons in Alabama today.
