Drug sentence

My son was sentenced to 3 years in prison for possession of a joint and half of an x pill. Is that lenght of time excessive. He only been arrested once before for poss, no jail time, went to rehab

The second time being convicted of possession of marihuana is a felony. Also, if the pill you mentioned was a controlled substance that would be a felony. Under those facts the sentence is within the range allowed by statute. The new sentencing guidelines may not call for actual imprisonment, but there are a number of factors that have to be considered. Consult an attorney.
