If they cannot afford to hire an attorney for him, he can apply for an attorney to be appointed to represent him through the court. He will need to file a document called an Affidavit of Substantial Hardship. A judge will review that form, and assuming that he qualifies then the judge will appoint an attorney to represent him.

The Alabama State Bar also operates a pro bono project called the Volunteer Lawyers Program. However, I believe it only offers services in civil cases because defendants in criminal cases can obtain an attorney through the court appointed system.

If the family decides they want to hire an attorney rather than use one that the court appoints, I'll be glad to discuss the situation with them. If they want to use a court appointed attorney, then please just tell them to get their son to file an Affidavit of Substantial Hardship with the court.
