Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

I have an 8 year old son. His father and I both live in Alabama and were never married or lived together so his father's name isn't even on his birth certificate. The father has never really been in my son's life and in fact, has only seen him twice in last two years. I have been thinking about taking him to court for child support and if I did, could I get back pay as well? I've never pushed the issue of support before because I was afraid the father would want visitation as punishment on my part. My son knows who his father is but doesn't care to be around him and I wouldn't want the visitation to totally turn his world upside down. I would sacrifice the support to have stability in my son's life but at the same time, I was wondering what the implications would be if I pushed for child support.

Thank you for this service

You could go back and get two years child support. He would be entitled to visitation, which you may not want. It would require a paternity test.
