How old does a child have to be to decide which parent they want to live with?

the age of majority in alabama is 19 years. up to that age the court determines who has legal custody of a child. the older and more mature the child is the more a court might listen to the child's wishes, but the court does not have to listen to the child at all in order to make its determination as to custody.
