Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

THe child is currently 16yrs. Everyone is on good terms. BUt when the child turns 18 how much time does the mother have to try to get back child support? They've been out of the courts for now for over 13yrs for misc reasons. He's been paying current and even paying like $40 a month extra for about 8yrs now to try to make a dent in the 7yrs he did not pay. The child is close to turning 17 and I'd just like to know whats the next step. I'd like to know what my husbands options are if any.

If he is under an Order now to pay back child support, that will go on as long as it takes to make the payment up.
