Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama
Disowning a parent
I am 24 (living in NY) and my mother is 54 (living in AL). She is very mentally ill, widowed, living unemployed off of an inheritance that will soon disappear, and incapable of taking care of herself. I'm worried that when she becomes broke I, as the only child, will be asked to support her financially or take care of her. As we have no relationship, I'm not keen on this. (1) Is it possible I will be charged with her care legally? (2) Is legal emanicipation / disownment a possibility? (3) If so, would that prevent me from being responsible for her?

You have no legal duty to support your parent.
