The best thing for your friend to do is to retain an attorney before filing a response - and to make sure to retain the attorney before the 30 days runs out. The kind of response he should make really depends on what his wife alleged in her divorce petition, as well as on what he wants to accomplish in the divorce. The more complicated the marital situation is (such as with kids, retirement accounts, investments, houses, length of marriage, etc), the more complicated the response to the complaint may be.

Your friend should schedule a consultation with an attorney, so the attorney can review the paperwork that was served on him and can advise him on how to go forward. He needs to take this seriously, or he could find himself being taken advantage of by his wife's attorney.
