Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

My ex-husband and I have joint custody of our two children, and I am the primary guardian. My ex-husband and his wife would not meet me to return my children after their weekend visitation. They refused to allow me to pick them up from thier house. I called the sheriff and had a deputy meet me at thier house. The boys and thier step-mother were not there. My ex-husband refused to tell the where abouts of the children. I was told to get an order of contempt by the deputy. Later that night, my ex-husband called me and told me to pick the children up. I did and called my lawyer. He told me there was nothing I could do except send my ex-husband and his wife a letter stating that they are responsible for picking up and dropping off the children on their appointed weekend of visitation. Is this the only action I can take? Aren't there any other legal actions that I can take against my ex-husband and his wife to make sure that this doesn't occur again?

The only other legal action you can take of to file a motion to have him held in contempt and to suspend his visitation until he obeys the court order with respect to visitation. You have to pay a filing fee and go back to court on this one.
