Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

my girl friend had to go to court on her daughters custody and to finalize the divorse and she didnt have a lawyer and they made her go in front of the judge any and she lost custody of her daughter and i was wanting to know is that legal and what does she need to do as far as appealing the ruling she has never had any conviction or drug problems she has custidy of her older daughter and i was wondering why they would serperate the kids that has been raised together since they where born

She probably lost because she did not have a lawyer and tried to go thru a system that she knew nothing about. She needs to contact an attorney and find the money.
