Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

giving mother full custody of child

I am writing at the request of my grandson. His girlfriend just had a baby, and he is the father. He is wanting to go into the Navy, and he was told by the recruiter that he had to be married if he had a child, but he was also told that the other option would be to grant her full custody. What type of form or what would be the best way to handle this matter. He does not want to get married, but he is willing to give his child financial support. He is 19 and she is 17 and still in high school. Is there a form that could be signed and notorized, or will he have to talk to a lawyer? Will there be any trouble with the judge okaying this, or will a judge even come into the picture?

Yeah, you would have to file papers with the court and have a judge approve the custody. He will have to pay child support which must be approved by the judge also.

Although technically, you don't HAVE to have a lawyer, but I highly recommend you get one locally. The paperwork must be done properly or it will slow down the process considerably.

It should be fairly straightforward, however, so it shouldn't be that expensive.
