Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama
impact on alimony
My husband of 13 years left me. Within 3 months of the separation he was engaged to and living with another woman. I was wondering how this would impact the amount of alimony I would receive. He is a professioanl earning in excess of $150,000 annually. I have not worked in more than 3 years, but am a trained radiology technician.

Re: impact on alimony
Generally, in New Jersey the fact that he became engaged after separation will have little if any impact on the issue of alimony. There are several statutory factors to be looked at in any evaluation of alimony. Also, your question indicated that Alabama law might be involved. I'm assuming that your husband is living in Alabama and you're living in New Jersey. Might be vice versa. If you live in New Jersey and have done so for more than a year, you may file for divorce here in which case the courts would apply New Jersey law.
I suggest you call for more information.
Re: impact on alimony
Thank you for your inquiry.
The fact that you have been separated for the past 13 years is the single biggest factor that may adversely effect your potential alimony claim. However, I must learn more information before providing you with any final conclusions.
