legalities in parental rights

My daughter is unwed & wanting to give unborn child father's last name- i told her it would be better from a legal standpoint for baby to have her last name. parents both in early 20's. thanks for your help

By statute she can give the baby any last name. My preference is for the baby to have the mother's last name if she is not married.
