Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

I never married my children's father but he did sign both birth certificates. When the relationship ended, I moved from Illinois back to Alabama. We have had no contact with him since October 2010. I have since started a new relationship. We plan to marry and I want the kids names to change and he wants to adopt them. What steps do we need to take first?

The father of the children must give up his rights to the children. He must do this by signing a document. This is part of the adoption.
