Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

name-change

i will be 16 sept 13 2002. My father has full custody of me in Alabama. I have lived in california for almost three years with my mom and step dad. I want to change my last name to my stepfathers. I'd like to add ''ly'' to my first name. Where do i start? Is it going to cost an arm and leg? Does my biological father have to agree?

As a minor, you cannot make name changes on your own.

Re: name-change

You can get your name changed through the closest Superior Court in the county in which you live. Your father will have to be given notice of the name change and if he wants to contest it, he must show up in court to say why. The courts go with what is in the child's best interest and one of the things they consider is how long you have had the name. If you want to hire a lawyer to take care of the name change, it should not cost more than $500.00. The process is fairly simple and you and your mom could do it pretty easily.
