Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama
paternity and child custody
my daughter is 3 months old, her father has only contacted me 3 times since her birth. his mother emailed me yesterday to say that i would be obligated to pay for 70% of the paternity test he requested after i was 4 mths pregnant and at that time she would discuss with me child support and custody in virginia. we lived in florida before he left for war and the baby and i reside in alabama, where she was born. does she have any right to do this? she stated that he is dealing with the trauma of adjusting to the new environment and he is not to deal with any of this. he has been home for 4 weeks now and had not contacted me for 6 weeks until yesterday while on a leave for the past week. please advise me, as i am low income and cannot afford an attorney, yet am afraid my life for the past 3 months might be taken from me by someone who said she is too young to be a grandmother and wanted me to abort my child. he has not made any attempt to support his child as he stated he had more important things to worry about at this time.

Just be sure not to sign any paperwork that this woman might give you. Mari makes a good point: go to DHR and get the paperwork started for child support and paternity. Call today - you will probably have to wait for an appointment so don't delay. Good luck.
Re: paternity and child custody
go to your county DHR office and file a paternity suit and request DHR become involved. Seek services from them and they will get the DNA tests and sort through the costs. Usually you would pay 50% of the costs but it is at a more favorable cost through DHR, takes longer though.
