Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama
My son dated a girl for a very short amount of time before she became pregnant. They broke up when she was about four months along and slowly she stopped talking to any of us. She has just had the baby and put her new boyfriend on the birth certificate and when we called we were told that if they were contacted again we would be arrested for harrassment. Seeing as how she didn't even know this guy until she was almost six months along isn't this somehow against the law besides being morally wrong?

To exercise his rights as the father of the child he must file a Child Support action in the circuit court. The court will order DNA testing,. If the child is his, the court will make an adjudication of paternity, order your son to pay child support and order that he be allowed time with his child. Your son should also register as the putatuve father of the child, if it has been 30 days or less since the child was born. Contact the Department of Human Resources to register Registration does not mean that you must pay support, only a court can order that, after finding that he is the father of the child. On the other hand, he and the mother can agree to terminate his parental rights. In that court proceeding he and the mother would agree that he would have no right to the child and also ask that no child support be payable to her for benefit of the child. He mayl loose the ability to come back and assert his rights if he ignores them now . Don't delay, act now. Good Luck
