Can you stop paying child support in Alabama when a child reaches the age of 19 or do you have to continue the payments while the child is attending college?

You can stop paying child support only when the court orders that you can stop, unless your original order says the payments stop at 19 years old. If the child continues on to college you will be responsible for paying a fair share of those expenses under the principles set out in a case called in re Bayliss. DO NOT simply stop paying. GO TO COURT and get relief from the support order. If you don't you may be liable for child support payments even after the child reaches 19 years of age.
