Legal Question in Family Law in Alabama

Termination of Child Support Obligation

In my divorce decree it states that I am obligated to pay child support until one of three events take place.

Child reachs age of majority

Child dies

Child is emancipated

What are the details behind the majority and emancipation events and are ther any special clauses or extention, IE; Child continue to college thus extending support requirements?

Re: Termination of Child Support Obligation

Age of majority refers to the point when the child reaches the age of 18. However, if the child is 18 and is still in high school, the obligation can extend until such child graduates. Emancipates refers to the child becoming married, divorcing the parents, entering the armed services, or becoming totally self-sufficient by some other means. Your order will dictate the term of your support obligation. Contact a local attorney for further assistance.
