Slander or Defermation of chacter?

Just one quick question. The man we are buying our trailer from is going around telling everyone that my husband and I are 3 months behind on our mortage payment and that he is going to kick us out. First of all we are not behind, and second why is he discussing our mortage with these people anyway? He told the #1 mouth in our small town and now people are asking us why we are behind and want pay. Please help!! Thanks!

Slander is a form of defamation. You could file suit against him in your county if you wanted. You would have to pay a filing fee, and I recommend hiring an attorney. Or you could just tell him that unless he apologized and retracted his statements you will sue. Sounds like a jerk to me.
