Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Alabama

Can I sue my roommate for not paying his half of the rent. Both our names were on the lease and they were automatically drafting our portions of the rent out of our accounts. It has now gone to collections and they are threating to put it on my credit report.

Yes, you can sue your roommate. THe lease probably has a "joint and several liability clause" which makes you responsible if he does not pay. Sue him in small claims court.
