Legal Question in Employment Law in Alabama

My daughter recently quit her job at a restaurant. Upon picking up her final paycheck she found a $100 deduction from her paycheck. The restaurant said she had destroyed a chef's coat that she turned in when she left (she didn't) and that she had to pay for it. (Highly doubt they cost $100.) They have already been notified that they are in violation of the wage and hour laws by reducing her pay below minimum. We have worked out the amounts with the local labor office here in Huntsville, Alabama and know the amount they need to charge her - if this charge for the coat is even legal. I believe her supervisor marked up the coat in retaliation for her quitting. Can't prove it thought. When she started working there she bought her own coats. When the new head chef arrived he got these coats and issued them to the employees and they were mandatory to wear as it has their logo on the coat....My question is: According to Federal Law, since Alabama has none and Federal would take precedence, can they even deduct for the coat? Did she sign an agreement about company issued uniforms? It all depends on her contract.
