Legal Question in Employment Law in Alabama

Laws on consectutive days

I work for a company as a machine operator. This company requires alot of overtime. That is fine when we work 6 days then get one off,but they have told us that we will be working the next 14 days with no day off well then we will have to work another 5 or 6 before having a off day. That is lke 19 or 20 days without a day off. I have a family and a young son,I wanted to know if their are any labor laws in working your employees that many days with no day off. Is there anything I can do?

Re: Laws on consectutive days

There are no laws that specifically prohibit an employer from working you 2 weeks straight or more without time off - unless there is an OSHA rule for your specific job, or possibly truck drivers who are required to have so many breaks per day or something like that. However, they must pay you overtime rate at time and a half your regular hourly rate. Don't let them fool you into thinking that you are exempt either. Unless you are a manager or some other specific exemption - which a machine operator would not be, you are entitled to the overtime pay. If they don't pay it, call me at 205-458-1100 and I'd be happy to talk to you some more about it.
