noncomplete

have work for my company over 7 years and have gotten a job offer from another company who has offered me double the income of my present employer. I asked for a copy of my noncomplete and was told i could not have a copy because it is the belongs to the company. was told i could look at it at the office and that was all. the new company needs a copy. what can i do? what are my rights? te old company is out of alabama and the new one is out of ohio.

I would try again to make a copy when they let you read it. Perhaps you could write down the part about the noncompete while you are looking at it if they will not let you have a copy.

Well, if your new job takes you to Ohio, there really should not be a problem. Noncompete agreements are limited in scope and one that prohibited you from taking jobs as far away as Ohio would not be enforceable. Depending on the state you're in, those things are rather difficult to enforce, anyway. Your best bet is to just make a copy at the office. I don't know why they wouldn't let you have a copy, other than to just be difficult.
