What are the benefits of Homesteading your personal residence, and what are the limits of protection?

The benefit of homesteading your personal residence is the tax break it affords. Once you have claimed the homestead exemption on your personal residence, you are entitled to a credit equalling approximately 50% of your assessed tax amount on your property taxes. Filing for the exemption costs you nothing, other than a trip to your county tax assessor's office, and you are then qualified for the exemption as long as you own the property.
