If you are getting SSdi and SSi payments and back pay of both when you win a disability case do you get the backpay in a lump sum or how do they give it out to you?

Re: Social Security backpay

On SSDI, you will receive a lump sum, but it maxes out at about $6,000.00, and you will get another lump sum 6 months later (which also maxes out). On the SSI, you would have to spend down whatever you were to get in a lump sum within the month so as to avoid knocking yourself out of benefits for that month.

In a needs-based situation, you can ask them to pay out the whole amount in one lump sum. It's got to be an exceptional situation. For example, if you have nowhere to live, and you need a home, they might pay it out specifically for that purpose.
