Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Alabama

A friend of mine was married for 10 years. His wife passed away without a will and never changed her benificiary to her current husband. Does the current spouse have any right to the money?

Beneficiary to what? What money? If you are writing about in insurance policy, the contract of insurance gives the money to whomever the named beneficiary would be, barring some other provision in the contract.
