if a fence has been up 45 to50 years can we claim adverse possession

It is possible, although the existence of a fence is just one factor in an adverse possession claim. Adverse possession does not happen automatically, I believe you need to bring an action in court to quiet title and assert adverse possession as the basis for your claim.
