Personal debts upon death
A friend's husband recently died. I believe all assets were jointly owned. The deceased had a $100k life policy and the wife was beneficiary. He has 2 credit card debts in his name only. Does she owe these debts? Can the credit card company lien on the house or life insurance proceeds?

Credit card debt is unsecured debt, so there is nothing that the credit card company can do to collect what is owed to them. The life insurance is the woman's and she has absolutely no obligation, moral or otherwise, to use those funds to reduce the credit card debt. The house is also safe, although the estate is responsible for paying his debts in some way.
